Horizons at New Canaan Country School

In the project-based Horizons approach, kids “learn by doing.” They become inspired as they explore reading, math, science, music, theater, art, swimming, and other activities that cultivate creativity and leadership. And it works. Once a student is enrolled in Horizons, anything seems possible.

New Canaan Mounted Troop

Building leadership, responsibility and confidence in youth through sound horsemanship.

New Canaan Mounted Troop, Inc. (NCMT) has devoted to building leadership, responsibility and confidence in youth through sound horsemanship. It provides a comprehensive, hands-on learning experience that emphasizes teamwork and follows a curriculum focused on horsemanship and equine care instruction. All activities are conducted in a family atmosphere that encourages participation in community service, a feature rooted in the history of the organization.

NCMT takes pride in its unique approach to teaching horsemanship through hands-on experience. All programs are designed to encourage children’s personal growth by promoting fundamental values such as leadership, responsibility, confidence, work ethic and teamwork in a safe, fun, family atmosphere. These are not only important around the barn but are also valuable through life: they can help each child excel in his or her future.

New Canaan Mounted Troop, Inc. (“NCMT”) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) educational and charitable youth organization. Founded in 1939 by Margaret Cabell Self, NCMT is the last remaining unit of the Junior Cavalry of America. Our mission statement is to build leadership, responsibility and confidence in youth through sound horsemanship. Children ages 7 and up are enrolled in a 10-month-long Full Cadet Program that offers a rich curriculum in equine care, hunt-seat riding, and showmanship. NCMT proudly offers the “Super Troopers” Therapeutic Riding Program for children and adults with special needs. Summer Camp and Adult Riding Programs are also offered.

Most horses and ponies are owned by NCMT, and all are shared amongst our riders. What makes NCMT unique is that it relies on donated horses and ponies for its instruction programs. The majority of our horses and ponies have come to us because either their owners could no longer care for them, or they are retiring from respectable show careers. Our horses and ponies receive a second lease on life, as teachers, to our cadets. Captain Hailey Miller recently described NCMT as “Giving Horses A Second Chance So Kids Can Have A First.”
