“What a Woman Can Do with a Camera: Frances Benjamin Johnston and her Contemporaries”

March 3, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Free

Dr. Kara Charles Felt will speak VIA ZOOM on March 3 @ 7 pm

Frances Benjamin Johnston (1864-1952) was a groundbreaking American photographer who specialized in photojournalism and portraiture before forging a career in garden photography, which brought her to Waveny circa 1915. Dr. Felt’s talk will investigate not only how Johnston was a pioneering photographer in her own right, but also how she tirelessly championed other women who became photographers in increasing numbers in the early twentieth century.

Kara Felt, PhD, is a photo-historian, independent curator, and lecturer based in Denver, CO. She has worked in curatorial departments at institutions including the New York Public Library and Grey Art Gallery and has curated several exhibitions at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and the National Gallery of Art, where her show This Is Britain: Photographs from the 1970s and 1980s opens in January 2023. She has written and lectured widely on photography from the nineteenth century to contemporary work with a focus on women photographers.
