: ASHTA.Yoga is an evidence-based wellness program created to improve the quality of life of cancer patients, survivors, and their families. It was developed by Dr. J. Gregory Mears, an oncologist at NY Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center, and Leigh Leibel, an Indian trained Ashtanga yoga instructor certified by Yoga Alliance USA. The eight-step protocol is informed by traditional Indian yogic teachings and includes techniques that reduce stress and create beneficial physiologic changes to the immune system, e.g.: meditation, controlled breathing, gentle yoga postures, chanting, wholesome nutrition, and the practice of gratitude. Small group classes and private instruction are taught at Columbia University Medical Center on 165th Street, NYC, and the Halo Wellness Center in New Canaan. Dr. Mears and Ms. Leibel are both New Canaan residents.
