Wolf Conservation Center Gives Talk at New Canaan Library: Saving a Species
October 1, 2017 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pmFree
Located in nearby South Salem, the Wolf Conservation Center has been promoting and educating the public on wolf conservation since 1999. New Canaan Library is pleased to host a special presentation by the organization on the fate of the red wolf. The event takes place on Sunday, October 1, 2017 at 2 p.m. in the Adrian Lamb Room; please register online at newcanaanlibrary.org.
The red wolf is one of the world’s most endangered wild canids. Once common throughout the southeastern United States, their populations were decimated by the 1960s due to hunting and loss of habitat. A captive breeding program was successfully established and the animals (once declared extinct) were ready to be reintroduced to the wild in North Carolina by 1987. Yet the fate of endangered red wolves remains uncertain. Though the only wild population of red wolves is at its lowest level since the late 1990s, the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission seeks to terminate the red wolf recovery program there – a move which would inevitably result in the loss of the last population of red wolves.
This presentation will offer an inside look into what can be done to save an endangered species in this presentation by The Wolf Conservation Center, a participant in the Species Survival Plan and Recovery Plan for the critically endangered red wolf.
