“WATER + WORDS and Water,” an Exhibition by Francis Ashforth, to Open in New Canaan Library’s Curtis Gallery
March 30, 2017 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
FreeWater is the star of artist Frances Ashforth’s striking monotypes, whether it is the presence or absence of it. Her compelling exhibition “WATER + WORDS and Water” opens on Thursday, March 30 and runs through Sunday, May 21. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, March 30 from 6 – 8 p.m. in the Curtis Gallery; all are welcome to attend.
Many of Ashforth’s stunning monotypes present waterscapes where the water, rendered in beautiful simplicity, is clearly the subject. In other landscapes water is artfully and subtly implied; either in the geography of the landscape or the arid, water-less quality of the land. In all of her work, the spirit of the water and her reverence for it is obvious. Her pared down palette of crisp whites and lush darks serves to highlight her work, and contributes a sense of the heroic.
The WATER + WORDS and Water folio is the fruition of a collaboration between the artist and CCP Master Printer Christopher Shore. The folio represents a two-year commitment of sustained effort, and is a testament to Ashforths’ commitment to water, and to all those who work to safeguard it.
“Water is our most precious resource, and my recent work addresses the study of arid, wetland, and drought-ridden habitats, ” states Ashforth. ” I am committing these views to paper in the hope that they will inspire good stewardship of the land.”
