We’re opening our 73rd season as New Canaan’s community theater with Edward Percy and Reginald Denham’s Ladies in Retirement. In this compelling mystery/drama a former actress, Leonora Fiske, and her long-time companion and housemate, Ellen, become involved in competing schemes that grow more sinister after the arrival at their home, of Ellen’s two sisters.
Director Dan Friedman says that although the show was written in 1930’s, the story is timeless and intriguing so it still resonates and entertains today’s audiences.
“I like the genre and the way this plot unfolds presents several different layers to the audience that cause them to potentially question what they’ve just seen and heard from one scene to the next,” says Friedman.
Producer Deborah Burke was also head of the Play Reading Committee for Town Players of New Canaan and was keen to stage this show. “it’s my job to read many plays and to find those that aren’t “done to death,” says Burke. “This particular play was a great read, so much so that I couldn’t put it down. And it seemed just creepy enough to work well in our end of October/Halloween slot.”
Featured in the cast are New Canaan resident Pam Toroyan as Leonora, Laurel Lettieri as Ellen, Zoe Bebon and Marcia Vinci, as the dotty sisters, Arthur “Kitt” Watson as the roguish nephew, Emily Vrissis as the flirtatious maid, and Lizzy Booth as Sister Theresa.
Performances take place at the Powerhouse Performing Arts Center in Waveny Park, New Canaan. Show dates are October 25, 26, and 31, November 1, 2, 8, and 9 at 8 p.m., and October 27 and November 3 and 10 at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are now available by calling 203-594-3636 or via the web at www.tpnc.org.
