This fall, spend time with scheming scamps, rascally rogues, delightful damsels, hilarious highwaymen, and one doting mother-in-law.
The opening production of our 72nd season is Thornton Wilder and Ken Ludwig adaptation of The Beaux’ Stratagem, a classic Restoration comedy by George Farquhar. The show centers on two fortune-hunting playboys, Tom Aimwell and Jack Archer, who go on the hunt for wealthy heiresses in 18th century rural England, but a band of thieves and true love soon disrupt their plans.
For more than a century, The Beaux’ Stratagem was one of the most frequently performed English comedies. Then it fell out of favor. In 1939, Thornton Wilder began adapting the play, but he never completed the project. In the summer of 2004, the Estate of Thornton Wilder asked Ken Ludwig (author of our most recent show, Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery) to complete Wilder’s unfinished adaptation. Wilder had made a brilliant start — he’d finished about half of it — and Ludwig was delighted to be asked to complete the rest.
“Normally, the hardest part of doing any period piece is making sure the play is accessible to a modern audience,” says director Kyle Runstead. “The great thing about this adaptation is that the authors have already done a great job of this. Even with the play being set in 1707, the characters are relatable in a way that really brings the comedy to life.”
“The Beaux’ Stratagem, like such Restoration comedies as She Stoops to Conquer and The School for Scandal, is hilarious and characters in it are over-the-top,” says producer Sheila Toner. “What else would you expect, especially when it has passed through the hands of comedic genius Ken Ludwig.”
The cast for this show includes newcomers and long-time favorites, including Daniel Mann, Caroline Brody, Laurel Lettieri, Sean Larson, Liam Cahill, Jim Childs, Jennifer Prescott, Jessie Lizotte, Leslie Brin Andrews, Roger Dykeman, Jennifer Woldman, Richard Stewart and Stephen DiRocco.
The show runs October 26, 27, November 2, 3, 9, and 10 at 8 p.m. and October 28 and November 4 at 2:30 p.m. You can order tickets by calling 203-594-3636 or visiting tpnc.org. All performances take place at the Powerhouse Performing Arts Center in Waveny Park.
