The Heiress, at the Powerhouse Theater
March 3, 2018 @ 8:00 pm - 10:30 pm
Catherine Sloper, the title character of The Heiress, has a difficult relationship with her father.
He is a successful doctor who has never gotten over the death of his wonderful wife, who died giving birth to Catherine. In spite of constant reminders of how disappointed he is with her, the plain, shy, and unsophisticated Catherine tries desperately to please her father — only to be told that she’s nothing like the woman her mother was. Suddenly, a handsome, worldly, but poor young man begins to woo Catherine, bringing her into direct conflict with her unloving, but sternly protective father.
The Town Players of New Canaan will present The Heiress, written by Ruth and Augustus Goetz and based on Henry James’ novel, Washington Square, starting Friday, February 23, and continuing for three weekends. The show was first produced on Broadway in 1947, and earned Basil Rathbone a Tony Award nomination as Dr. Sloper. Its 1949 film version, also scripted by the play’s authors, starred Olivia de Haviland, who won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance, Montgomery Clift, and Ralph Richardson.
According to John Atkin, who is directing the Town Players production, every word in the script is written for a specific reason, requiring each member of the cast to develop a back story for their specific character.
“This takes tremendous work for me as director, but also for the cast, as it involves analyzing motivations for each interaction,” says Atkin.
Featured in the cast are Ash Lago, Mark A. Sank, Robert Rosado, Laurel Lettieri, Leslie Brin Andrews, Kathleen Spellman, Sarah Sherwood, Brian Buckley, and Jessica Grabarz.
Tickets are now on sale for The Heiress. Show dates are Friday and Saturday, February 23, 24, March 2, 3, 9, and 10 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, February 25 and March 4 at 2:30 p.m. For tickets, call 203-594-3636 or visit www.tpnc.org.

Does he love her or her money? Set in 1850 New York City, the play is the story of shy, unsophisticated, and plain Catherine Sloper, whose stern, emotionally distant father finds her lacking in every way. Then, the handsome and young, but penniless Morris Townsend begins to pursue Catherine. (l-r. Mark A. Sank, Robert Rosado, Ash Lago) Photo courtesy of Juli Sellers.
