Talking Shop–A nostalgic look at New Canaan stores from the 19th century to the mid-1970s.

June 25, 2020 @ 9:30 am - 4:30 pm

The New Canaan Museum & Historical Society has extended its exhibition, Talking Shop, through August 30. This show is an exploration of shops in New Canaan from the 19th century to the mid-1970s. It features the independent and family owned stores that have been the backbone of this community for generations.

The show shares the stories of these local shops through photographs, ephemera and artifacts. In includes stores such as Silliman’s Hardware that closed its doors in 1981 after 114 years and had everything from a tractor to a toaster, and the Whitney Shop, which opened after World War II, and at first sold vegetables and teapots.

This fascinating exhibition is curated by Patricia Funt Oxman, antique dealer and former New Canaan shop owner.

The New Canaan Museum & Historical Society is currently open Tuesday-Friday 9:30-4:30 and Saturday 10-2 by appointment. Because space is limited to ensure social distancing, reservations are recommended. Please call 203-966-1776 ext. 2.
