St. Mark’s Episcopal Church Presents Substance Misuse and Co-Occuring Disorders

April 19, 2018 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Co-Occuring Disorders: Out of the Shadows and into the Light

Let’s talk about COD (co-occuring disorders) – the combination of one or more mental health challenges and substance misuse/addiction that impacts the lives of more than 10.2 million and their families! The national prescription drug and heroin epidemic makes headlines daily, but for each youth and family impacted there was a time before substance misuse/addition was in the picture. Understanding potential paths to use, and what you can do to provide help, hope and support can turn the tide and change outcomes.

Stephanie Marquesados 19 year old son, Harris, died by accidental overdose in 2013. She founded the Harris Project to advance prevention programming and advocate for the implementation of integrated treatment opportunities to improve the lives of teens and young adults diagnosed with COD. Stephanie is an attorney, and board member of the NYS Regional Planning Consortium, co-chair of the Westchester County Department of Community Mental Health Committee on Co-occurring Systems of perspective to this critical topic. She also speaks about COD to audiences ranging from high school students to health care professionals. CODA (Co-Occuring Disorders Awareness) is the Harris Project’s innovative peer-driven prevention program empowering youth to become positive decision-makers, seek early intervention and support friends/peers.
