In keeping with the Chamber’s mission of “Connecting The Community With Commerce” this Calendar was created to allow member businesses and New Canaan based non-profits to promote their upcoming events to the public. The Community Calendar is a local resource for all residents and visitors and has quickly become one of the most visited pages on the site. The New Canaan Historical Society is thrilled to present “Orientalism in American Art and the Silvermine Art Colony” with an opening reception on Sunday, January 7th at 4 pm. This exhibit explores America nineteenth and early twentieth century’s fascination with the “Orient,” and the culture of the area. More than 30 paintings, plus rugs, furniture and decorative objects will be on display. The show runs through March 30th.
Co-curators Ed Vollmer and Susan Gunn-Bromley will give a talk on the work of the Silvermine artists who travelled to North Africa, Morocco, and Tunisia to explore and paint. Tom Davies, also a curator of the show, will be present in the gallery to provide additional information on the paintings, many of which are from his private collection.
Following the talk, the Roger Sherman Inn is offering a prix fixe “Taste of Orientalism” dinner. For $35 exclusive of tax, service and beverages, diners can enjoy a three-course themed meal with either a slow-cooked bass or roasted chicken entrée. Reservations are required by January 4th and can be made by calling the Historical Society at 203.966.1776. For more information, please visit www.nchistory.org.
