New Canaan Library presents Daisy Khan: Born With Wings: The Spiritual Journey of a Modern Muslim Woman
October 4, 2018 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pmFree
Pre-conceived notions about who Muslim women are and what their lives are like are but two of the many topics addressed in Daisy Khan’s fascinating memoir, Born With Wings. Ms. Khan will speak about her book on Thursday, October 4 at 6:30 p.m. in the Adrian Lamb Room. Copies of the book will be available for purchase, courtesy of Elm Street Books. Please register online at newcanaanlibrary.org.
Once Daisy Khan set aside the thoughts of others as to who Muslim women are she began to realize her own power, which led her down many paths. In Born With Wings, Khan skillfully interweaves stories from her childhood in Kashmir, her time as an architectural designer in New York City searching for her spiritual path, the ‘Ground Zero Mosque’ controversy, and her work in interfaith bridge-building, promoting women’s rights around the world and changing perceptions about American Muslims. Daisy Khan is now on a mission to travel across the country to initiate honest and relevant conversations about the place of faith, spirituality, feminism, and activism in our daily lives.
Daisy Khan is the Founder and Executive Director of the Women’s Islamic Initiative in Spirituality & Equality (WISE), a New York based non-profit organization which enables Muslim women leaders to create a peaceful and prosperous world anchored in gender equality and human dignity. Khan appears regularly on media outlets CNN, MSNBC, and ABC and is frequently quoted in print publications such as The New York Times and TIME magazine. She has appeared in numerous documentaries including PBS’s Three Faiths, One God; Muhammad: Legacy of a Prophet, and National Geographic’s Inside Mecca. The Huffington Post listed her among “Top Ten Women Faith leaders,” and she was mentioned among TIME Magazine’s “100 Most Influential People.”
