“Nature’s Abstractions,” Featuring Works by Barry Guthertz and Donna Forma

January 8, 2017 @ 3:00 pm

Free

New Canaan Library welcomes the New Year with an art exhibition that furnishes a rejuvenating look at the beauty of nature. Interpreted through abstract photography and unconventional sculpture, “Nature’s Abstractions” is a joint exhibition featuring the photography of Barry Guthertz and the sculpture of Donna Forma. The exhibition runs January 5 through February 12, 2017. An opening reception will be held on Sunday, January 8 from 3 – 5 p.m. in the Curtis Gallery; all are welcome to attend.
Though Guthertz and Forma approach the subject matter from vastly different artistic perspectives and through different mediums, their commonality lies in the celebration of nature’s intricacy and wonder, even in some of nature’s more humble elements. The bark of a tree, the veins of a leaf or an insect’s hive become sophisticated art at the hands and eyes of both artists.

“Photography has become the medium to express my love and deep connection to the breathtaking compositions I find in nature’s abstractions,” says Guthertz. “They ask me to sit quietly and contemplate their mysterious beauty.”

“I believe our importance as individuals is put into perspective when seen in relation to nature,” states Forma. “Some of my pieces are about having as much control as possible, even as I
know I can’t bend nature but must instead work with her. Others are about change and movement, evolving as natural forms do in the elements.”
“Nature’s Abstractions” is sponsored by the Art Committee of New Canaan Library, and is curated by Mary Moross and Micaela Porta.
