Local Resident speaks at New Canaan Library on Experiences in Nigeria, “My Nigeria: An Insider’s Look”
September 25 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pmFree
Author, speaker and Westport resident Catherine Onyemelukwe has a multi-faceted professional life, all of which are directly related to her 24 years of living in Nigeria. Join her on Monday, September 25 at 6:30 p.m. in New Canaan Library’s Curtis Gallery as she speaks about her fascinating experiences. Please register online at newcanaanlibrary.org.
In 1962, 21 year old Catherine Onyemelukwe launched her two-year adventure with the Peace Corps, with no idea as to what adventures the African country had in store for her. She learned that the Nigerian people hold strong ties to their families, clans, tribes, and country, and it didn’t take long for her to feel the same bond. Catherine will speak also about her memoir, Nigeria Revisited: My Life and Loves Abroad, which revisits her two years overseas that became twenty-four, during which her experiences brimmed with friendships, students, travels around the country, and love.
Catherine Onyemelukwe began her career as a Peace Corps volunteer in Nigeria, where she met her Igbo husband and raised three children. Her teaching career was interrupted by the Biafran War when she lived in husband’s village. After the war she co-founded Nigerwives, an
organization for foreign wives of Nigerians, ran her own fashion company in Lagos, and returned to the U.S. to earn her MBA at Yale. She now speaks, blogs, and writes from her home in Connecticut while serving on the board of the US National Committee for UN Women and teaches courses in Lifetime Learners, a program at Norwalk Community College. She and her husband celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in Nigeria in 2014.
