Artists, printmakers, and laborers use the same hazardous chemicals as laboratory chemists, but often don’t receive the same training on proper use. This special series of lectures will seek to cover that information gap. Whether you work with art materials at home or in a community studio, this workshop will provide all the resources you need to establish a safe art practice.

We will cover the properties of common substances: metals, solvents, plastics, and pigments and dyes. We will analyze current legislation on chemical manufacturers, OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Association) and EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) guidelines, and determine our obligations as consumers. Learn how to read Safety Data Sheets, how to identify hazards, and methods to protect yourself from them. Learn how to identify the right personal protective equipment for the chemicals you use. Discover tips and tricks on fitting safety and compliance smoothly into your studio pedagogy.

This class will be helpful for all, and especially to those who are required to enforce OSHA standards as part of their job, such as employers and studio technicians.

LIZ BANNISH oversees the OSHA compliance program at the Center for Contemporary Printmaking. Liz’s personal prints have been shown on a national scale and in mediums from fine art prints, to photographs, to alternative processes. She was the Printmaking and Photo Technician for Smith College in Northampton, MA for five years. Previously, she has trained as Apprentice Printer at Wingate Studio in NH and conducted workshops for the Southern Graphics Council.
