“Chocolate, Strawberry, and Vanilla: A History of American Ice Cream” Presented by Anne C. Funderburg via New Canaan Library Webinar

When it comes to America’s favorite sweet treat, ice cream reigns supreme. Learn about the surprising history of ice cream in this country when New Canaan Library welcomes historian and author Anne C. Funderburg, who will discuss the topic through her book, Chocolate, Strawberry, and Vanilla: A History of American Ice Cream. The live webinar will take place on Wednesday, April 20 at 7 PM EST. Author Anne Cooper Funderburg will trace the history of ice cream and ice cream making from the Colonial Era to the present. Among the topics she will explore are the different serving innovations, such as the sundae and the ice cream cone, and advances in making ice cream, including the invention of hand-cranked freezers. Anne will also discuss the evolution of retail, from small confectionery shops to soda fountains, ice cream trucks, and today’s scoop shops. She will also look at the giant retailers, including Baskin-Robbins, Haagen Dazs, and Ben & Jerry’s.

Anne Cooper Funderburg writes books about American history, focusing on food and drink. She is the author of Sundae Best: A History of Soda Fountains and Chocolate, Strawberry, and Vanilla: A History of American Ice Cream. Her favorite flavor is mint chocolate chip.
