Linda Herritt received the award for Best in Show from CCP’s 2021 Annual Members Exhibition.
Herritt’s work explores the intersection of abstract visual elements and text, using their interactions to create a cadence, working together or at cross purposes in a particular piece. Beginning with a fragment of a narrative, she then further breaks apart text by interrupting it visually, creating tension between the acts of seeing and reading. At times the text dominates, and at other times the letters are camouflaged or fragmented by the shapes or colors in the background.
Her work recently began focusing on the issues of gender and class within 19th century fiction and the power dynamics she noticed underlying the narrative. The out-of-context phrases that she collected from these novels became the source for this current body of work. Her text selections come specifically from novels by Charles Dickens, most prominently Little Dorrit, Bleak House, Oliver Twist, and Hard Times. The selected segments of the narratives are small windows into the characters, their circumstances, and their lack of agency.
Herritt’s prints were made using the printmaking processes of monotype and screenprinting. The monotype process allowed her to retain a more spontaneous, painterly quality in contrast with the precision of the screen-printed text.
