“Brooklyn in the 1970s: A Photographic Journey” Presented by Photographer Larry Racioppo as Part of Library’s “One Author New Canaan” Community Read
March 16 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pmFree
During the month of March, New Canaan Library celebrates “One Author New Canaan” and the literary works of award-winning author Jacqueline Woodson with programming that relates to themes found throughout her work.
Brooklyn, as it was in decades past and present, is the setting for a great deal of Jacqueline Woodson’s books. Join professional photographer and native Brooklynite Larry Racioppo via live videoconference on Tuesday, March 16 at 7 PM EST for an immersive look at how he has documented the borough of Brooklyn (and New York City) for over 40 years.
The presentation includes photographs from his collection and features many of his Brooklyn-based photo projects such as Brooklyn Churches, Theatres, Coney Island and Prospect Park, as well as photographs and photographic equipment, books, ephemera, and archival material from his storied career. His latest book “Brooklyn Before” highlights the vitality of his native Brooklyn, stretching from historic Park Slope to the beginnings of Windsor Terrace and Sunset Park. His black and white photographs pull one in, stretching memories back more than forty years to long-lost recollections of life on the streets and in apartment homes, depicting the intimacy and roughness of life in a working-class community of Irish American, Italian American, and Puerto Rican families with honesty and insight.
