February 8, 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Free

ArtScapades at New Canaan Library presents February’s lecture, “The Great Art Migration, From the South to Harlem” on Monday, February 8, at 7 PM EST. The sixth lecture is as part of its 2020-2021 series, “A New Look at Modern Art.” “The Great Migration” will examine the defining geographical shift of African American art within the United States via live webinar. Please register at newcanaanlibrary.org; Zoom sign in information will be provided upon registration.

Robin Hoffman and Jodi Stiffelman will look at the lives and works of four African American artists who were working around the turn of the 20th century. Horace Pippin, Laura Wheeler Waring, Aaron Douglas, and Archibald John Motley addressed the themes most pertinent to the era, including slavery, racism, the role of Blacks in World War I, and the shift of the African American art world to New York, specifically to Harlem.

Robin Hoffman and Jodi Stiffelman of ArtScapades began teaching art appreciation in 1998. They have presented at libraries and museums in Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, and Florida, and are returning for their twelfth season at New Canaan Library.
