“Are You Reading Me,” by Karen Vogel, is Next Exhibition at New Canaan Library’s Curtis Gallery
July 27 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pmFree
– Social cohesion – the existence of, the unraveling of, and the stretching of which challenges communication – is richly reflected in Karen Vogel’s work. “Are You Reading Me” opens on Thursday, July 27 and runs through September 17, 2017. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, July 27 from 6 – 8 p.m. in the Curtis Gallery; all are welcome to attend.
A painter, printmaker and landscape designer, Vogel uses typography, architecture, and organic forms in a linguistic manner, echoing outpourings of sound and narrative. Her influences are profound and varied: from the art of Modernist painter Stuart Davis, teeming with talk and music, to Richard Diebenkorn’s sublime landscapes and the bold, raw poetry of Howard Hodgkin. Vogel’s work prompts a tendency to “read” her prints and paintings; to decipher the forms as positive and negative spaces create a surface tension from layers of depth, connection, disorder.
“My work utilizes a personal language of visual ciphers, such as, print, typography, architectural and organic forms to explore monumental shifts in human communication and achievement,” states Vogel. “I begin with the structure of hand-cut stencils, and evolve through layers of multiple forms, textures, patterns, and processes.”
