Advent Forum: Learn about the Psalms with J. Chester Johnson
December 3 @ 11:30 am - 12:30 pm
Join us in Morrill Hall for a forum and Q&A with J. Chester Johnson. Johnson is a poet and nonfiction writer, who has written for important projects of the Episcopal Church, composing the Litany for the national Day of Repentance (October 4, 2008) when the Episcopal Church formally apologized for its role in transatlantic slavery and related evils. In addition, W. H. Auden (1968-71) and Johnson (1971-79) were the two poets on the drafting committee for the retranslation of the psalms, a 12-year undertaking that resulted in the Psalter, contained in the current Book of Common Prayer. These retranslated psalms have also become a standard, reflected in their adoption by Lutherans in the US and Canada; the Anglican Church of Canada; and the Scottish Episcopal Church. This version of the psalms has been extensively used by the Church of England. Published in 2017, Johnson’s Auden, the Psalms, and Me tells the story of the retranslation.
