“A Conversation with Dr. Scott Gottlieb: Pandemic, Present and Future” Presented by New Canaan Library and Stamford Health

New Canaan Library is pleased to partner with Stamford Health in presenting a unique opportunity for the community to join a conversation between physician, medical policy expert and former FDA commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb and Dr. Rohit Bhalla, Senior Vice President, Clinical Affairs & Quality, at Stamford Health.

The conversation will center on Dr. Gottlieb’s bestselling book, Uncontrolled Spread: Why COVID-19 Crushed Us and How We Can Defeat the Next Pandemic. They will discuss, among other topics, the Covid-19 pandemic, the public health response, and the necessary changes that must go into effect to prepare ourselves for future pandemics. All attendees are invited to pose questions to Drs. Gottlieb and Bhalla following the presentation.

The event will be held in-person at St. Luke’s School, 377 North Wilton Road, New Canaan, CT on Tuesday, March 15, 2022. The talk will begin at 7 PM, preceded by a book signing by Dr. Gottlieb, beginning at 6:15. The first 200 attendees will receive a copy of Dr. Gottlieb’s book. Scott Gottlieb, MD, was sworn in as the 23rd Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on May 11, 2017. Dr. Gottlieb is a physician, medical policy expert, and public health advocate who previously served as the FDA’s Deputy Commissioner for Medical and Scientific Affairs and before that, as a senior advisor to the FDA Commissioner.
He also worked on implementation of the Medicare drug benefit as a senior advisor to the Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, where he supported policy work on quality improvement and the agency’s coverage process, particularly as it related to new medical technologies. In 2013 Dr. Gottlieb was appointed by the Senate to serve on the Federal Health Information Technology Policy Committee, which advises the Department of Health and Human Services on healthcare information technology.
Dr. Gottlieb was a Clinical Assistant Professor at the New York University School of Medicine in Manhattan, where he also practiced medicine as a hospitalist physician. He is currently on the boards of Pfizer and Illumina, is a Senior Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and a partner at New Enterprise Associates.

Rohit Bhalla, MD, MPH, serves as Senior Vice President, Chief Clinical and Quality Officer, Stamford Health. In his role, he oversees clinical affairs, care management, hospital medicine, quality, patient safety, research, and other programs. He has also served as organizational incident commander during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr. Bhalla serves as a member of Boards and Committees of the America’s Essential Hospitals Institute, Connecticut Hospital Association, Quality Council of the State of Connecticut, Greater New York Hospital Association, and United Hospital Fund. He is Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. He has published several papers in the areas of quality improvement and health policy and serves as a member of the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Medical Quality.
Dr. Bhalla received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the Boston University School of Medicine six-year BA/MD program, and his Master of Public Health degree from the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University. He completed Internal Medicine residency training at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, Public Health/General Preventive Medicine residency training at the New York City Department of Health, and is board certified in both specialties.
